Garment Care

Most of what we stock is natural fibre. Treated well it improves; treated carelessly it shrinks or loses its hand. A few notes by cloth.

Linen

Wash cool, on a gentle cycle, with a mild detergent. Skip the tumble dryer — hang damp and let the weight of the water pull the creases out. Press on a medium iron while still slightly damp if you want it crisp. Linen is supposed to crease; that's the cloth, not a fault.

Seersucker

Wash cool and hang to dry. Never iron flat — the puckered texture is what makes seersucker breathe, and pressing it out permanently ruins the cloth.

Bamboo & lyocell

Cool machine wash, gentle cycle. These fibres are weaker when wet, so don't wring them. Dry flat or on a hanger, away from direct sun. Low iron if needed.

Cotton

Machine wash cool to warm. Wash dark colours separately for the first few washes. Tumble dry low or hang; hot drying is what shrinks cotton shirting.

Flannel & wool

Dry clean, or hand wash cold with wool detergent and dry flat. Never tumble dry. Brush after wearing and let the garment rest a day between wears — wool recovers its shape if you give it time.

Knitted polos

Fold, don't hang — hangers stretch the shoulders out of knitwear. Cool gentle wash, dry flat.

Suede shoes

Keep them dry. Brush with a suede brush after wearing to lift the nap and remove dust. Treat with a suede protector spray before first wear. For marks, use a suede eraser rather than water. Use cedar shoe trees between wears.

Leather shoes

Wipe down after wearing. Condition every few months and polish as needed. Let them rest a full day between wears so the lining can dry out — this does more for the life of a shoe than anything else.

Espadrilles

Spot clean only. Never machine wash or soak — water breaks down the jute rope sole.

Always check the care label on the garment itself; where it differs from this page, follow the label.
